Pakistani husbands can ‘lightly beat’ their wives, Islamic council says

When the most populous province in Pakistan approved a law that gives women protection from abusive husbands, the country’s Council of Islamic Ideology protested.

It was ‘un-Islamic’, it said, for women to leave an abusive relationship. It added that it would be producing its own proposal before the law was expanded to other parts of the country.

A shopping centre in Nottingham was evacuated this morning after a suspicious package was found.

It is thought that an unattended suitcase prompted the evacuation of the Victoria Centre in the heart of the city.
